One of the required functions of the OBDII system (the second generation of the OBD system, known in its European version as EOBD – European On-Board Diagnostic) is the ability to store fault codes related to malfunctions that may affect exhaust emissions and signal this via the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) — also known as the Check Engine light.
DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) is a standardized fault code consisting of a letter (P, C, B, or U) indicating which system in the vehicle the fault occurred in, and four digits describing the specific error.

OBDII systems distinguish between two types of faults:
Type A
(Serious faults)
- Faults related to exhaust emissions
- Trigger the MIL immediately after a single occurrence during a drive cycle
- Store the “freeze frame” and fault code
Type B
(Less serious faults)
- Faults related to exhaust emissions
- Store a pending fault after a single occurrence during a drive cycle
- If the fault does not occur again, the code may be automatically erased
- Trigger the MIL and store the freeze frame and fault code after two occurrences during a drive cycle
